Auckland Castle and Bishop Auckland
After a leisurely breakfast we make the short journey to Auckland Castle. This proud home of the Bishops of Durham stands as one of the best-preserved bishops palaces in Europe. Over the last decade the site has undergone major renovation work to bring the castle back to its former splendour. Enjoy time at leisure to explore the castle with state rooms designed to tell the history and story of the bishops that lived here. This afternoon we have included an all-access ticket to The Auckland’s Project’s other attractions in the town so you are free to explore at leisure. There is a Mining Art Gallery, Faith Museum and Spanish Art Gallery with links to Auckland Castle’s heritage as home to Francisco de Zurbarán’s series of Spanish paintings for over 250 years. Or take a trip up Auckland Tower providing 360 degree views of the castle, Bishop Auckland and the surrounding rural area.
Raby Castle and Weardale Railway
We journey to impressive Raby Castle, home of the Vane family since 1626. We take a lunch break in Barnard Castle. In this little town you can see where Dickens immortalised ‘Dothboys Hall’, take a look at Cromwell’s refuge or browse around the antique shops. This afternoon we drive into the Durham Dales to Wolsingham, where we enjoy a return train ride on the heritage Weardale Line to Stanhope, taking in the beautiful views of the Durham Dales.
Durham
This morning we drive north to the historic city of Durham - well known for its huge cathedral overlooking the river and the beautiful cityscape. Maybe enjoy a stroll along the riverside and perhaps obtain lunch in one of many cosy city cafes. A must visit is Durham Cathedral with its great architecture and peaceful surroundings.
The Park Head Hotel is situated just a short drive from Bishop Auckland. The hotel and its 38 rooms have recently undergone a full renovation since being taken over by The Auckland Project. Giving a modern stylish and contemporary feel. Facilities include a bar, restaurant and a communal garden area. No lift (ground floor rooms on request).
