Modern Coach TravelGuided TourLunch
When London’s churchyards filled up, just as Queen Victoria came to the throne, a scheme was launched to build The Magnificent Seven - huge, modern cemeteries in a ring around the City. As soon as it opened in 1839 Highgate Cemetery became THE place to be buried if you were rich or famous. As the number of burials reduced after the Second World War, the cemetery fell into a ruin and was neglected, becoming a sanctuary for birds and animals. The cemetery has two sections, East and West side, West being the older of the two. It contains lots of gothic architecture including the Circle of Lebanon, Egyptian Avenue, and Terrace Catacomb. We enjoy a guided tour of the West Cemetery and self-guided visit to the East Cemetery. Prior to the tour we include a 2-course fish and chip lunch, followed by cheesecake with tea/coffee. Please let us know of any dietary requirements at the time of booking. Please note paths are steep and sometimes muddy and there are two flights of stairs so please do make sure you wear appropriate footwear. Approximate home time 7-8.
